testing out this new diamond pattern on the text boxes in SLARPG. i think i like it. the character names in the dialogue boxes were really only added for the sake of showing everyone’s names in the trailer, but i think i might keep them–it’ll be kind of tedious to go back and add names to every text box, but it looks better that way, and it helps people learn all the characters’ names

also, if you didn’t see the paladin headquarters in the game’s first trailer, well, here’s that!

Here’s another thing that showed up briefly in Super Lesbian Animal RPG’s first trailer: Greenridge’s Guardian Tower! This is where Faith and the Paladins work

This building is easily is the single largest piece of pixel art I’ve made to date. It’s so huge that it needed its own tile sheet, and I needed to stitch two screenshots together to show the whole thing

here’s one of the new areas i worked hardest on leading up to super lesbian animal rpg’s first trailer: the mysterious, crumbling sanctuary in the forest where the party finds noel

it’s very pink

Greenridge is probably the most important location in Super Lesbian Animal RPG, so it needs to make a strong first impression. But it was also the first environment I started revising graphics for in 2015, so it was overdue for some touching up

Above is the first screenshot I posted of the game in December 2015, and below is how that same shot looks as of January 2017. In particular, the old flat shadows beneath objects have been replaced with a nice soft, grassy texture (this is most noticable beneath the trees), and the cliffs (which were previously just recycled cave wall tiles) are now all zig zaggy to give them more depth. I think it’s looking quite nice now!

it’s that time again! here’s a theme for the main cast’s hometown: Greenridge.

this track is actually not an original composition of mine, but rather a re-imagination of the town theme from SLHRPG, “Dew on Ponett,” composed by Thom Wall (@sidewalkwitch)!

Thom’s original theme is super fun and peppy, which suited SLHRPG’s silliness. however, @ponett was looking for something a little more laid back this time around—so i was given the task of remaking this tune. the result is an arrangement that’s a little lighter and “homey” sounding. it ended up sounding quite a bit different, but i did my best to maintain the spirit of the original song’s melody and overall progression.

i hope you enjoy this track! in the coming weeks i will be posting more themes for various settings in the game. stay tuned <3

here’s a very important new version of an old song for the game courtesy of bee (and thom)!! honestly being able to walk around greenridge with the new town theme playing makes it feel like the game is really starting to come together

Hey everyone! Here’s the inaugural SLARPG Audio Devlog, as promised on Patreon. It’s in video form just for the sake of having images of what we’re talking about on-screen for reference, but it’s more of a podcast type thing. Timestamps for individual points of discussion are listed in the video’s description on YouTube

In this chunky first installment, Anthony and I go in-depth discussing NPCs! Specifically, the paladins, Mona the librarian, Jodie’s girlfriend (and Greenridge’s town guardian) Faith, and the mysterious nonbinary plant person Noel. We go into our inspirations, some scrapped ideas, how the characters’ personalities informed their looks, and more. Also, Anthony asks questions like “what if Mario had plate leggings?”

This first one is public, just so people have an idea of what this reward is like, but future audio devlogs will be released much further in advance for $5 and above patrons. Probably at least two weeks, or longer if we’re talking about Secret Stuff, just so patrons can get a sneak peek at what they’re helping fund

Hope y'all enjoy it!

different color schemes i tried out for melody and allison’s casual outfits in super lesbian animal rpg’s first trailer

the game opens with a scene set before melody has become a paladin, and therefore before she would have her Iconic™ healer outfit. so i thought it would be fun to give her a casual outfit just for that scene! it needed to be different from her normal color scheme because becoming a paladin is a big change for melody, and giving her a new palette when it happens is a good way to convey that visually. so i tried a bunch of different options. the one with the star above it is the final design i went with, which i chose because it reminded me of neapolitan ice cream, and that’s like, so cute? oh my god?

allison gets a different outfit in this scene too, because why not

one of many redesigned enemies in super lesbian animal rpg: the misty specter! as seen in the game’s first trailer

the original misty specter (seen on the left) was basically designed on a whim way back in 2013 because i felt like drawing a simple cartoon ghost girl. so i took the basics of the concept and drastically reworked her to bring her up to the game’s new level of polish. she’s much better now, and a little creepier looking, which actually probably just makes her cuter. also i guess she’s an elf now

Let’s talk NPCs! Here’s a better look at the three new characters who briefly appeared in Super Lesbian Animal RPG’s first trailer

  • Jodie’s girlfriend Faith is probably the most talented magic user in Greenridge, which is why she’s already got a job as Greenridge’s democratically elected town Guardian at age 24. As the island’s last line of defense, Faith knows a wide variety of spells, and she commands the town’s paladins. When she’s not up to her eyeballs in work, Faith enjoys doing a little painting and hanging out with Jodie. She was designed by my bf @exclamationpointman based on some guidelines from me
  • Mona is the sole employee of the Greenridge Public Library, where Claire spends much of her time. Claire makes Mona’s job very difficult and they do not get along. Anthony wanted the librarian to be a mouse and provided her design for me, although I ended up tweaking her a bit
  • And lastly, Noel is a mysterious, plant-like stranger that the gang meets out in the woods. They seem to know a lot about the forest, but they aren’t the most talkative with strangers

There are many more NPCs where these three came from! Stay tuned for more down the line

what’s up it’s almost 8am and i just spent like two hours tweaking the first drawing of claire from a year ago to make her significantly more on-model so my header looks better (old on the left, new on the right)

ponett:

this was getting saved for super lesbian animal rpg’s first trailer (which i hope to finish before christmas), BUT the trailer is going to have so much new stuff that it can’t hurt to show off one little thing ahead of time

so this is one of the enemies from the original game, the malcontent mummy! she might actually be the recurring enemy i was most proud of back in 2013. but she, like everything else, is getting a fresh coat of paint for the new version. and i’m very, very proud to see how my art’s improved in the last three years

FINALLY! a theme for SLARPG’s late-joining fourth party member, Jodie Caldwell.

it’s been a while, hasn’t it? the themes for Melody, Allison and Claire were all finished within a couple of weeks of each other, nearly a year ago now. at the time, Jodie was still under wraps and a lot of who she is as a character was still up in the air, so her theme was put on hold. but even as @ponett fleshed out her personality, this theme was trapped in development hell for months. this marks the fourth attempt at writing a theme for Jodie, each previous one being both drastically different and totally unfitting. but at long last, here we are.

Bobby describes Jodie as a nearly “archetypical hero” — justice-driven, stoic, humble, and kind. she comes from a working class background and is most fulfilled by work and activities that are physically engaging. as such, i felt that her song would be one that is understated, driving, and valiant, with a bluesy, faintly western vibe. that makes this the only character theme to date that is primarily in a minor key!

that said, Jodie has a softer side as well: she is protective of her friends, especially Melody, even to a fault. that called for a more delicate and uplifting chorus to punctuate this theme. the result is a song that, after multiple failed attempts, is finally—hopefully—truly representative of who Jodie is.

i hope you enjoy this track. there are more SLARPG themes on the way—stay tuned for more! <3

it’s been a long time coming! but bee and i are very excited to finally let y’all hear the theme for everyone’s favorite lesbian tiger knight!!!
