these last couple days i’ve been working on revamping the cave tileset in Super Lesbian Animal RPG to make it more visually interesting. everything was very flat and brown and plain and it was obvious it was one of the first areas i ever designed. so this is how it’s looking now!
Check it out! We interviewed @ponett about Super Lesbian Animal RPG and the full interview is now available to everyone! Enjoy our discussion about fan games, making something new from fan games, writing LGBT characters, and so much more.
hey! remember that big interview i did with @cockatielcutie about Super Lesbian Animal RPG and its origins? well now you can listen to it in its entirety. it was a great discussion, and i hope y’all enjoy it
Super Lesbian Animal RPG’s Lady Provence and Rhett finally have actual mugshots! I was using hastily colored versions of @exclamationpointman‘s original concept art for them for the longest time. Here they are with Holly just for the sake of having the whole Paladin Brigade together
i mean she was basically just created for this project, and i feel like i’ve always had a pretty clear idea of what i want her to be
she’s partially inspired by how i used to write fluttershy for various mlp fan projects. this was especially true towards the beginning. but she’s gotten a lot more… nuanced, maybe? more realistic? her character voice has gotten slightly more confident over the years, or at least less exaggeratedly gentle and nervous. i love fluttershy, but she’s written to be more relatable to shy little kids than 20-somethings with anxiety disorders
i’ve just always enjoyed writing shy characters because i was always the quiet kid and i have horrendous social anxiety. i used to use fluttershy for that, and now i’m using my own characters. i guess it would be more accurate to say melody’s drawing from the same personal reasons why i latched onto fluttershy as a creative outlet, rather than being a direct translation of fluttershy as a character
in writing melody i’m drawing a lot from my own experiences with relationships and my own anxieties. she’s not LITERALLY a self-insert, of course, but i’m writing largely from my own experiences to try and tell a more genuine story. the way melody and allison started dating is kind of like how anthony and i started dating. melody is a chubby bisexual trans girl with anxiety because i am those things. some of her anxieties and fears are anxieties and fears that i also have. and on a more superficial level, she’s a healer because i like playing healer classes in video games
i wanted to create a character like that because i’d never seen a character like that, like myself, in literally any media. i just thought she was a character that deserved to exist
it’s like half real reasons and half “i just like this animal and thought it’d be cute”
melody is a fox because she’s the character i see myself in the most. my first fursona i designed in middle school was a fox (because i was a big fan of tails), so i’ve always felt kind of attached to the animal
the others are largely a matter of me liking those animals, although more specifically allison is probably a bunny because of bunnie rabbot, claire is a cow because my first real WoW character was a tauren, and jodie is a tiger probably because, in all honestly, i saw zootopia not long before finalizing her design and i had those damn buff tigers on the mind. (side note: claire was almost a sheep, and for the longest time jodie was going to be a dog)
yes, i am extremely self indulgent when it comes to character designs
beyond that, though, i wanted the choices of animals to feel… slightly contradictory to the characters, in a way? i didn’t wanna pick animals that would stereotypically fit their body types and personalities. the party is very much not your typical Legendary Heroes–they’re a bunch of 20-something misfits with various identity issues who aren’t qualified to be saving the world, and i think the slightly mismatched animal choices reflect that
claire is a cow, a pretty big animal in real life, but she’s the smallest and most fragile member of the party. she’s also an extremely mundane farm animal that isn’t seen as particularly magical in most of the world, even though she’s a witch. allison is the strongest physical attacker in the party and generally pretty brave, neither of which are traits typically associated with fluffy little bunnies. and melody, who’s gentle and self-conscious, is a fox, a predatory animal generally seen as crafty and violent in folk tales. they’re also generally pretty small, lithe animals, whereas melody’s tall and chubby
the only one who really perfectly matches up with the animal she is is jodie, which was a very deliberate choice since she’s supposed to be the most capable adventurer of the group
still touching up the tiles in greenridge a bit, because of course i am. i just want everything to look its best for the demo, which i hope to release in may or june if i’m lucky! anyway the grass is more detailed and fluffier now, and also i added more flowers, because you can never have too many of those
i promise i’ve been working on stuff other than touching up existing tiles, haha, this is just the stuff that isn’t spoilers

Many months of work later, here it is: the first trailer for Super Lesbian Animal RPG! Please enjoy
SLARPG is a short, turn-based RPG following the story of Melody Amaranth, a kindhearted but meek transgender fox who’s decided to learn healing magic and become a paladin. She’s joined by her adventurous girlfriend Allison, as well as their friends Claire (a sarcastic, rule-bending witch)(she is also trans) and Jodie (a dependable, somewhat motherly knight). Over the course of the story, our inexperienced heroes will meddle with forces beyond their control and find themselves responsible for the fate of their quaint little hometown. They’ll also fight some spherical frogs, travel to a forgotten land in the sky, befriend a robot or two, and anger the local librarian. But that should go without saying. It will be out in 2017. For more info, you can check the game’s FAQ
You can help support the game’s development via my Patreon!
Music in the trailer: Claire’s Theme, by @neutralnewt
NPCs designed by myself and @exclamationpointman
Enemies designed by myself, @gyrostar, @fattoads, and @inzergue
I’ve gotten a lot of asks about the game, unsurprisingly, so I’m putting together this handy dandy FAQ to answer most of the common questions. I’ll be updating this post regularly throughout the game’s development
If you’re a new follower or this got reblogged by someone and you don’t even know what a Super Lesbian Animal RPG is then I’d suggest watching the game’s first trailer or viewing the game’s presskit on Indie DB, or you can check the #SLARPG tag on my blog
Hey there!
For those not aware, I run a show called PauseCast, and just recently we did our 36th episode and we also did a special interview with @ponett about creating Super Lesbian Animal RPG, fan works as first drafts, making new work from fan work, and more. The full interview is 80 minutes long, and is available right now in early access for Patrons of the show! The full interview is available for Patrons who support the show with $1 or more a month. It’s a really fascinating discussion, and we’d love for you to listen.
We’ve released a clip of the interview in our 36th episode for everyone though! It’s available to listen to o’er here, as well as in a few other places:
And the show can be reached in a couple other places:
Please go check out this episode! It’s filled with great discussion about loneliness as essential to certain games, 90s anime, and a breakdown of frustrations with Kingdom Hearts.
hey everyone! i did a beefy interview with jessica here on Super Lesbian Animal RPG and its origins, and a solid 20 minutes of it covering most of the main questions can be listened to here starting at 1:15:22 in the podcast, with the rest thing being exclusive to the show’s patrons for now. give it a listen! it was a really interesting talk
Hi! Hello!! Now that I’ve got your attention with some screenshots:
I just posted almost 9 whole minutes of Super Lesbian Animal RPG gameplay footage for my Patreon supporters to see early! Some of this is an expanded look at scenes that were in the trailer, and some of this is brand new. (Well, it’s less new if you’ve been reading my Patreon updates. But still!)
Also it’s the end of the month, which means I believe this is your last chance to back my Patreon before my next payday, if you were thinking about doing that. Again, I’ve said this a lot, but I’m eternally grateful for the financial support!
in my ongoing efforts to make the parts of the game that will be in the eventual demo more polished, i’ve been spicing up Super Lesbian Animal RPG’s Basement Dungeon. i realized that the floor, being all magic and whatnot, would make a nice light source. so i used that as an excuse to make everything more pink and purple
here are some limited edition Super Lesbian Animal RPG valentines to give to that special someone tomorrow. or not. actually yeah don’t
I’ve been putting off finishing this, but anyway! I wanted to draw a nice new piece of promotional art of Super Lesbian Animal RPG’s Melody to replace the old stuff
Along with it, I figured I’d do a little expression sheet of sorts for Melody–not for use in the game, necessarily, but mainly to practice drawing her before I make that whole ten page comic about her. And also partially because pretty much all the art I’ve put out of Mel has her smiling and variety is fun
