Is it paper mario like, the battle system? Or paper mario like, the quirky writing?!!?! (Likes paper mario)
More the humor. It uses a traditional turn-based battle system
Congratulations to you all on release! The love you've all put into the project is crystal clear, and I'm really enjoying it! A question for Bobby: knowing you have great care for Mega Man, and seeing Claire's last name is "Higsby," I wanted to ask if that was a choice inspired by Battle Network (and if there were any other early-game name references you felt like divulging)!
Yes, Claire’s last name is in fact taken from Battle Network’s Higsby. When trying to brainstorm last names for the crew I think I came across the last name “Higby” and was like “hey maybe it’d be funny if Claire had the same last name as the overbearing nerd who runs the battle chip shop in MMBN” and it just stuck. It’s but one of many Mega Man allusions in the game!
Hi, I know this is probably the sort of engine bug/limitation you can't really do anything to prevent, but I was wondering if you at least had some advice about this...I got through the first 2 or 3 hours of the game with a bluetooth gamepad and the default in-engine controller support and it was working perfectly fine, but for some reason now the game has randomly stopped recognizing the gamepad entirely (even though its still connected to the computer and recognized by other applications) for no clear reason? Do you know if there's anything that can be done about this or should I just concede and try to figure out Joy2Key?
Yeah sorry, I’ve got nothing. RPG Maker, different controllers, and Steam can all interact with each other in odd ways that are out of my hands. I would definitely recommend JoyToKey, which will just map whatever keyboard buttons you want to whatever controller buttons you want
i'm terribly sorry if you have been asked this before, but do you have any desire to make a sequel game? i found slarpg to be very charming and funny and i would be excited to see what you could do without being restrained by the rpgmaker engine.
I have many ideas for more things I’d like to do with these characters and this world, I just can’t say what form that’ll take next. I started work on SLARPG when I had just recently turned 21, and I am now about to turn 29, so if you asked me right now I’d probably say I don’t have another big RPG in me just yet. Thus the immediate next thing I make probably won’t literally be “SLARPG 2” in the way you might be envisioning it. But it could be something else set on Reverie. I don’t want to make any promises until we have something concrete to share, though
I’d also like to learn another engine, but I haven’t even really had a chance to rest yet since I’m still worrying about post-launch support and constant bug reports and patches and the initial sales performance of the game and whatnot and also Christmas/my birthday is in two days. So these are all things that I’ll be worrying about in 2023, after a nice vacation
Hi! I'm getting towards the end of the game. Does SLARPG have a postgame where I can finish off remaining quests and such?
Nope! But you’re warned at the point of no return.
Hey so i bought the game on steam, and im about to start playing, but i noticed there's two sliders in the settings, and im not fully sure what to do with them. "Politics" seems fairly obvious enough and ill probably max that out, but what am i supposed to do with "ludonarrative dissonance"?
Is the game more fun if thats higher or lower? Does it have any significant gameplay impact?
Sorry i get really stuck with settings when im not sure what to do, cause im worried ill miss something super fun/important if i dont set them correctly.
you should just have fun and be yourself
Do the politics and ludonarritive dissonance sliders actually do anything and if so, what. I don't want to touch the LND slider before knowing what it changes and I couldn't find anything anywhere about it.
Adjusting those values DOES do something: it makes those numbers different in the options menu. It also moves the sliders left and right!
Different anon; I can confirm that the Steam Deck only has issues with any of the portions of the game, or settings menus, that are accessed by the function keys. This purely is an issue with the Deck's keybindings and the trackpad mouse emulation not functioning in the game for most controller layout selections. Proton basically runs the game perfectly outside of a few frame rate hitches when you press a button during dialogue.
This seems to line up with what we heard during the beta! Wonky to set up due to not being built for a handheld, but the only big thing that’s been reported is some odd hitches during dialogue. Disabling the text sound effect and/or setting the text speed to instant from the in-game options menu should help with that
There may be some more Proton- and/or Steam Deck-specific bugs or crashes in there somewhere, but we only had one person testing on a Steam Deck, so it’s hard to say. (And, again, SLARPG is NOT Steam Deck verified and we cannot offer support for Steam Deck-specific issues. Sorry! We’re only officially selling it as a Windows game for a reason. I was shocked that it even runs.)
Unless I'm missing something, I think getting bestiary entries is a little bugged somehow - I've battled the tombstone drone multiple times, but it just won't give me the entry for it after the battle for some reason. (and if it's not a bug, I'm just missing something, I think it needs to be made more clear what's happening)
That’s just a matter of bad RNG, sorry! Almost every regular enemy in the game has a 50% chance of dropping its Bestiary entry on defeat, including that one.
Do you have any bug report channels? I have the game running on the Steam Deck, but it has weird jank like running at a weird shrunken size, and needing a keyboard to plug in to change that. Also, needing a usb hub with keyboard and mouse plugged in to get to the key bindings menu.
We’re kind of just taking bug reports wherever, but also we can’t offer any support for Steam Deck-specific issues, sorry. The game doesn’t officially support the Steam Deck (again - decade-old RPG Maker engine) and we have no way to test it on that since we don’t own one. It’s quite frankly a miracle Proton lets the Windows build run at all
hi ive bought this game as soon as i could, the soundtrack is SO fucking insane and i hope to jesus that you put the ost on youtube and like. the Rest of it on bandcamp because My God that dungeon theme. incredible work
Yes, we’ll be putting the soundtrack up on Bee’s Bandcamp as well as Steam (and possibly elsewhere - TBD) in January. We hoped it would be ready alongside the game, but we needed the extra time to sort the soundtrack release out
I don't know if this has been asked already, but does it benefit y'all more when people purchase the game through Steam, or through itch.io? I'd just like to support the game as much as possible
We get slightly more of a cut from itch, but it’s not a massive difference. Buy it wherever you’d prefer!
So I'm encountering an unfortunate problem where the game doesn't seem to be reading my PS4 controller. Near as I can tell I have all of my controller inputs and settings right, so I'd thought that even if it's only set to take xbox or something, steam would still function as a middle man for me. But, nothing.
Unfortunately I can’t guarantee support for PS4 (or Switch) controllers due to the game being made in a decade-old version of RPG Maker that predates those controllers existing and becoming standardized for PC use. The number of Steam features (such as controller support) I’m able to integrate into the game is also extremely limited because of this
If you don’t mind using an extra step, however, you can use a simple key remapper program like JoyToKey to map the keyboard controls to whatever buttons you want on pretty much any controller in existence
