hi friends! today was going to be more of another behind the scenes day, but i’m afraid i haven’t been feeling well. nonetheless, i thought i could at least share this: the initial sketch for Faith’s theme. it has a nice homey feeling, i think. :)
fun fact - this version is included as one of six bonus tracks on the SLARPG Demo OST! if you like SLARPG’s music and want to help keep me going, you can support it here, or though my ko-fi.
take care and stay tuned for new music on Monday
❤️
folks have been dying to see more of Jodie since the demo came out, so i thought now would be a great time to share her newly updated theme! like the music in the demo, it’s been given a facelift with soundfonts and samples to fit the soundtrack’s overall aesthetic - a far cry from the original chiptune sound! this is what it always sounded like in my head.
if you ask me, Jodie’s got a face you can trust. 💖
hi everyone, please enjoy this newly updated theme for everyone’s favorite lovable tiger knight, jodie! the new instruments really add a lot of warmth to the song, i think. and if you haven’t heard the original, well hey, here’s jodie’s theme!
In the tune of the super mario world cartoon opening: Super lesbian super lesbian super lesbian RPG.
hey friends! so i’ve been meaning for a while now to delve a bit into behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into making the music for SLARPG, and i thought a great place to start would be the first boss theme! because unlike most of the other tracks in the demo, this one had SEVERAL complete rewrites. here’s the breakdown of what you’re hearing:
The First One the first draft didn’t last beyond this skeletal two-part sketch, for one good reason - it’s boring! since the first boss encounter is the climax of the demo, it needed to be energetic, and this was just too sluggish and uninteresting - not to mention it sounds too much like one of the main boss themes from Kingdom Hearts. back to the drawing board.
The Second One AKA the one that sounds like something out of Sonic Adventure 2 (“Amen Break” drums and all). it was interesting to play around with the classic DnB style of percussion, but ultimately it felt out of place and again, didn’t have the right energy.
The Third One okay, this is a bit better: the faster tempo and intense arrangement helps. however, the 6-beat rhythm threw off the driving momentum that this particular boss fight needed. there’s a time and place for less common time signatures (see: Claire’s theme), but this wasn’t one of them.
that said, one element of this draft DID work: the call-and-response structure between the two lead parts! once i tried that, i knew that it was right for the song; it just needed a stronger arrangement to back it up.
The Last One so by this point you can imagine i was a little stumped. everything so far had sounded too unoriginal, unenergetic, or out of place. i realized that the problem was that up to this point i had been trying to write A Boss Theme™ - but i hadn’t written a theme for The First SLARPG Boss Fight! the music in a game should help support its unique story, so how could i do this?
that’s when it hit me to transform Allison’s theme into a fight theme. after all, this part of the story was meant as a pivotal point for Allison to “show her stuff,” and
it had the perfect energy for it! adding in that call-and-response and another over-the-top solo is all it needed to seal the deal.
this initial draft was intentionally produced in an 8-bit style to add another layer of silliness to the boss reveal, but Bobby and i ultimately agreed that the impact would be funnier if the music itself sounded serious, which is how we ended up with the final symphonic-rock version you hear in the game.
and there you have it! thanks for coming to my ted talk. see you Monday!
time for another new SLARPG track! here is the area theme for The Wasteland, a harsh desert sprawling with mysterious ancient machinery. i decided a percussion-focused track was in order here, with lots of drones and mechanical and sounds peppered in!
starting today, i’m going to try posting new music—SLARPG related or otherwise—every Monday, and WIPs and behind-the-scenes stuff on (most) Thursdays. stay tuned!
I don’t think I wanna have my fursona actually show up in the flesh, but I mean, she is canonically there as a random citizen of Greenridge, off-screen. The fortune teller (Anthony’s fursona) makes a reference to her in one of the tarot readings in the demo
Oh, and the disclaimer at the beginning of the demo looked like this for a while during development, but I knew opening my quirky RPG with a small fluffy white dog representing the creator would just invite some heavy comparisons to Undertale
work on the SLARPG OST continues! here is the theme for the tentatively-named Amber Woods, a new area in the game. this is actually the second draft that i made for it, after failing to give the area the right vibe the first time. practice makes better!
very excited to share this new music from SLARPG!! I’d say it’s one of my favorite tracks in the game, and that would be true, but also I think I say that every time Bee makes a new track
I got to interview @slarpg by @ponett! This game is beyond cute, and the interview is one of my faves! Go read the interview, share the page, and play the demo for this really cool RPG!
the overworld sprites for super lesbian animal rpg’s party members were long overdue for a quick touchup… i don’t think i’d actually tweaked any of them in like two years
i’m not even sure the game will still have an explorable overworld at this point (i’m leaning towards just having the different areas be connected directly), but if not then i’ll find other uses for these sprites, i’m sure
this is definitely the most important thing i could be working on tonight, yes
hello everyone! so the Super Lesbian Animal RPG demo has been received very well, but I was never quite happy with one thing: the character sprites. they were a bit generic and needed more personality, for sure. so here’s a peek at the new and improved sprites for Melody and Allison that I’ve been slaving away at for a month and a half
haha just joshin y’all, april fool’s! they actually look like this
however, I must say… none of the party members have gotten as drastic a redesign as Claire
I don’t want to rule it out entirely, but in my mind Melody is probably way too anxious about being a good partner for ONE person to really entertain the idea of dating someone else. At this point in her life, at least. She’s only been with Allison, her first partner ever, for like two months, and is still figuring out how to do this whole “dating” thing
That being said, if y’all want to ship the whole party together or whatever then by all means, be my guest. Give Melody as many girlfriends as you want. Much of my writing has its roots in transformative gay fanworks (that’s a more professional sounding way of saying “sappy shipping fanfics”), so I’m certainly not gonna stop folks from shipping non-canon stuff in SLARPG
