a little experiment i wanted to get out of my system! as i’ve said before, i daydream a lot about making a platformer starring allison from Super Lesbian Animal RPG. a while back i did a few NES-stylemockups just for fun. well, recently i started wondering what it would look like if i did a 2d platformer in this world with hand drawn hd art. so to test that art style out, i redrew the original 8-bit mockup
i’m really happy with the results (the character sprites especially), but this would be WAY too much work for a project with one artist, so it will probably remain a mockup
here’s a better look at Paula’s full mugshot from the updated Super Lesbian Animal RPG demo, as well as her concept art by @exclamationpointman (with colors and minor adjustments from me)
Melody Amaranth is a kindhearted but meek transgender fox from the small town of Greenridge. Recently, she made two important realizations about herself. One: she’s deeply in love with her adventurous best friend, Allison Goleta. (The feeling was mutual.) And two: if Allison has her heart set on becoming an adventurer, then maybe Melody could join her. As a healer.
Version 2.0 covers the same portion of the game as the original demo (roughly an hour of the game, letting you explore Greenridge and fight your way through the first dungeon) but now features enhanced music, improved battle UI based on player feedback, some art tweaks, brand new sound effects and jingles, a smattering of balance changes, and most importantly, a new major NPC to meet: Allison’s coworker Paula the polar bear!
Of course, if you’re sitting out the demo and/or this update in favor of waiting for the full game, we’re still hard at work on that! We’ve made a lot of progress, and we think SLARPG is really shaping up to be something special
The Super Lesbian Animal RPG demo update has been released a few days early for Bobby’s Patreon supporters! Version 2.0 covers the same portion of the game as the original demo (roughly an hour of the game, letting you explore Greenridge and the first dungeon) but now features enhanced music, improved battle UI based on player feedback, some art tweaks, brand new sound effects and jingles, a smattering of balance changes, and most importantly, a new major NPC to meet: Allison’s coworker Paula the polar bear!
So, big news: a major update is coming for the Super Lesbian Animal RPG demo next week!
The updated demo will still cover the same part of the game (Greenridge and the Basement Dungeon), but it features updated music, many brand new sound effects (a lot of the old ones were placeholders), improved battle UI, some graphical touch ups, some balance tweaks, and most importantly, a new major NPC to talk to: Paula! Full patch notes will be posted when the update goes live on itch.io.
This update doesn’t really radically change anything about the game, as the response we got to version 1.0 was already overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve been focused more on working on the rest of the game than fixing stuff that wasn’t broken. But v2.0 better reflects the level of polish we’re going for with the rest of the game, so we’re excited to share it very soon!
Supporters of my Patreon will also get to play the update a couple days early!
been working on a lot of little things for SLARPG lately! here’s a battle ui update. whether skills cost MP or Star Power is now much more clearly labeled in the menus
oh also i realized that the ui for the party members at the bottom had been a few pixels off-center this whole time so i fixed that lol
hey friends 💕 things have been quiet on the music front for @slarpg as development gets deeper into Spoiler Country, but rest assured work on the soundtrack is still going strong. while you wait, enjoy this new battle theme for the amber woods!
we’ve been making great progress on SLARPG lately, and we’re very pleased to share this new battle theme from the Amber Woods!
also, we may have mentioned this offhandedly in the past, but yes. this means we can confirm that the different areas in SLARPG have unique battle themes!!
a new illustration for Super Lesbian Animal RPG, featuring the party heading out for an adventure on the Sapphire Islands! thank you so much to everyone who’s checked out the demo and helped it hit 10,000 downloads! we’re still plugging away and pouring a lot of love into the full game to make sure it lives up to the hype
here’s a new shot from Super Lesbian Animal RPG’s second dungeon, the Neon Labyrinth! it’s quite a bit more complex than the first dungeon seen in the demo. something’s definitely up with these brightly colored mechanical ruins…
hey folks! it’s been a while since we shared new music from @slarpg. in the spirit of winter, here’s a chill tune from a snowy area in the game world.
it’s been a while since i shared any of the @slarpg-related questions from my curiouscat on here! so here are some of those
anon asked: Are there any transmasc characters in slrpg
yes but i can’t really say who because we’ve revealed like four male characters and i know three of them are definitely cis
beth and mary ena are both nb and somewhat masculine in how they present in-game, but i’m not sure if we’ll establish their assigned genders… i feel like if i was like “oh, this nonbinary character is dfab” some people might interpret that as “okay so they’re REALLY a girl”
anon asked: How does HRT work in the SLARPG universe? Literal magic?
they use magic for basically everything, so i imagine magic plays SOME part in producing it or making it more effective. but melody still takes pills for it. you can see the prescription bottles on the counter in her bathroom
i could easily just resort to saying they use body transformation magic to instantly alter their bodies, but i think that makes it a little harder to relate to the trans characters in this world if you can just go “bippity boppity boobs” and get the exact bodies they want without it being a process
it’s the same reason why allison has to pay rent instead of them living in a beautiful post-scarcity utopia with free housing. their world is better than ours, but i still want them to have similar problems for the story to feel grounded and relatable
anon asked: I recently played the demo and I noticed that Greenridge looks a lot smaller and more compact that the images you’ve posted. Did you design an alternate map specifically for the demo?
the demo only lets you explore roughly half the town. there’s a bit more past those barricades to the south and east that will be seen in the full game, like the library, claire and jodie’s house, etc.
yeah hybrid beast folk are possible and probably fairly common, we just haven’t designed any yet
anon asked: Will we ever find out Melody and Claire’s deadnames? I’m fine if we do, and also fine if we don’t
i don’t currently plan on revealing their deadnames because 1) i don’t want to give transphobes ammo and 2) there will always be people who consider themselves trans allies but also still on some level view deadnames as “real” names
anon asked: i sometimes wonder if you actually like bartholomew at all
as soon as i saw anthony’s design i knew that bartholomew was horrible and that i loved him
anon asked: What are the sexualities of the dog paladins?
rhett and holly are bi and provence is a lesbian
anon asked: provence gives off more asexual vibes to me tbh
anthony and i considered making provence ace, but i worried about the implications of that. i don’t want to be like “oh yeah, one of the paladins is aro ace! you know, the really stern and unfriendly one who shows little emotion”
anon asked: what if Claire had Cow from Cow & Chicken’s voice
from anthony: “they go in, chet is overwhelmed by the amount of stuff on the menu. rhett begs him to just get a soup or a salad and not make things complicated, but the server offers dipping sauces for their free breadsticks that cost like $8 each and chet just immediately agrees. their parents right afterwards make a casual suggestion that rhett should pay for the meal. rhett sips her diet sprite in silence”
anon asked: how skilled are the Dog Paladins… on the dance floor
from anthony: “rhett is the most likely to dance, but the worst at dancing. she doesn’t really flail, but she doesn’t know whole dances, she just kind of knows parts and mixes them together. provence was raised to be good at formal dances like waltzes, but doesn’t consider that really ‘dancing’ so much as ‘a way of life.’ holly doesn’t dance alone, she might kinda bob a little. when she’s dancing with someone else, they’re like a pinball and she’s the paddles”
